The Pastoral System at Bitterne Park School
The Pastoral System at Bitterne Park School has been graded as ‘outstanding’. As a school we are very proud of this achievement and we are determined to ensure that all of our guidance and welfare systems are outstanding both now and in the future.
Each year group is organised around a traditional Pastoral System in that they have a Progress Leader and an Assistant Progress Leader though the work of the Progress Leader is academically driven. The team is divided into:
Progress Leader:
The role of the Progress Leader is to ensure that all students are making expected progress. This ‘progress’ is measured both internally and externally. High achieving aspirational targets are set by the school. Progress leaders monitor progress and enforce intervention strategies where necessary. The day to day management include the overview of year tutor teams, review days, parents’ evenings and reward assemblies and trips. Progress Leaders are crucial in their management of behaviour and this is tackled through a learning agenda.
Assistant Progress Leader:
The role of the assistant is to assist in the monitoring of student progress. Their key role is year group attendance where they have a responsibility in ensuring that attendance in their year group exceeds the school target, which is externally set. Intervention and regular liaison exists with the school’s Educational Welfare Officer.
The Form Tutor:
Every student is allocated a form tutor on their arrival to Bitterne Park School. The tutor has a significant role in both the academic and social development of students. This includes the day to day monitoring of students. This is the first port of call of any concerns.
Student Welfare Services
Student Welfare Assistant :
The role of the Student Welfare Assistant is primarily first aid. However, one to one counselling sessions are offered where appropriate and referrals made to the School Nurse if needed.
